Rawal Dam Chowk Interchange Project. The Significance

Rawal Dam Chowk Interchange project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Pakistan in July 2020. Three other projects were also inaugurated on this occasion. These projects include the first phase of developmental works in Sector I-15, Korang Bridge, and PWD Interchange.

After completion of these projects, Islamabad Expressway will become a signal-free route, providing a hassle-free travel experience.

The completion time for the Rawal Dam Chowk flyover project is two years. It will be executed by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), housing its financial resources.

The Rawal Dam Chowk design of the project

Rawal Dam Chowk design is based on constructing two underpasses and a flyover under this project. Rawal Dam Chowk new design will help to manage heavy traffic flow on the busiest roads of the Twin Cities.

These roads include Club Road, Murree Road, Park Road, and Lehtrar Road. These roads play a vital role in connecting the Twin Cities and the suburbs, such as Bhara Kahu, Bani Gala, and adjacent areas to these roads.

Being a game-changing developmental project, the Rawal Dam Chowk flyover can save hundreds of commuters from inconvenience.

Construction progress update

As per government directives, the due time for the project completion was October 2022. Due to speedy construction progress, local newspapers reported that the project would most likely be completed by June 2022. The Interchange’s current construction progress is considered to be satisfactory. Almost 90% of the construction work has been completed.

While CDA and relevant authorities are concerned about the timely completion of this project for the continuation of smooth management of traffic on these roads. The construction teams are working in double shifts to make it possible to open the Rawal Dam Chowk Interchange for the public by June 2022.

Traffic Diversion Plan for commuters’ facilitation

Meanwhile, Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has issued an alternate traffic diversion plan. The traffic diversion plan has an enforcement timeline till 31st October 2022. The diversion routes will help save the commuters from any inconvenience during the construction period.

While a Rawal Dam Chowk Google map is also available for the facilitation of commuters and residents. Moreover, ITP’s radio station will also update citizens about the diversion routes. 

Purpose of the construction of Rawal Dam Chowk Interchange

The Rawal Dam Chowk Interchange project will prove to be a permanent solution for the management of messy traffic on Park Road, Murree Road, and Lehtrar Road.

The heavy and messy traffic flow on the Rawal Chowk is owing to the increasing population in the residential areas adjacent to these roads. The traffic flow has been contributing to traffic congestion, increased travel time, and delays in traffic restoration.

Due to these issues, commuters prefer to travel on alternative routes which ultimately results in traffic congestion on adjoining routes as well, especially during the peak traveling hours. All such problems lead to the commuters’ frustration and delays in their schedules. 

Significance of the under-construction Rawal Dam Chowk Interchange

Rawal Dam Chowk Interchange is an important point, which connects Islamabad and Rawalpindi through inter-linked roads. Not only Twin Cities, but it also connects many residential areas adjacent to Park Road, Murree Road, and Lehtrar Road.

  • Connecting the Twin Cities

Club and Murree Roads connect Islamabad and Rawalpindi. These roads connect the Twin Cities through Faizabad, an important commercial venue of Rawalpindi.

  • Multi-purpose safe route

In 2017, during the Faizabad sit-in, Rawal Dam Chowk Interchange provided a safe passage to the commuters. It proved to be a vital diversion route, which helped the commuters from Park Road to safely enter into the F and G sectors of Islamabad.

Rawal Dam Chowk Interchange also proves to be a safe passage for the important personnel of Diplomatic Enclave and Red Zone.

Due to its geographic significance, the Rawal Dam Chowk Interchange project will benefit thousands of commuters and residents. According to estimates, daily 50000 commuters will be facilitated after the project’s completion.

The project is beneficial for many residential areas adjacent to Park and Murree Roads. These residencies specifically include the Rawal Town, Margalla Town, Bahria Enclave, Chak Shahzad, Farash Town, and many other housing societies.

  • Significance for public institutions and private entities

The number of housing societies is increasing on Park Road and Murree Road. Hence, many wedding halls, nurseries, and commercial points are located here. Apart from private entities, many public and private sector educational institutions and hospitals, such as COMSATS University, Federal Urdu University, National Institute of Health (NIH) and NIH Allergy Center, Isolation Hospital and Infectious Treatment Center, National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), and many other organizations are located in adjacent areas.

A large number of commuters are students, patients, hospitals staff, and business owners. On Rawal Chowk, they face difficulties due to the regular traffic jams on daily basis.  

Thus, completion of the Rawal Dam Chowk flyover will help all such commuters. It will also help them by cutting down the travel time from 35 minutes to almost 10 minutes when traveling in-between Twin Cities and suburbs.
