First “suspected” case of Omicron in Pakistan

KARACHI: According to an official statement issued by the District Health Officer, Karachi District East, the first case of Omicron in Pakistan is reported by the Regional Disease Surveillance and Response Unit Karachi. The case is reported at 7:00 pm on 8th December 2021, while the suspected patient is 65 years old unvaccinated woman with no travel history.  The patient is currently discharged from the Aga Khan University Hospital and is isolated at home. According to the statement, the District Rapid Response Team has been taken on board for immediate action on tracing and testing the patient’s family and contacts.

 Omicron is a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, the specimens for which were collected in Botswana on November 11, 2021, and in South Africa on November 14, 2021. The new variant was reported to WHO on 24 November 2021 and was named a Variant of Concern (VOC). According to WHO, “this variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are concerning. Preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection with this variant, as compared to other VOCs”.
